Do you ever notitce yourself going through each day with endless check lists of what you have to get done, what MUST be accomplished?  I know that I have far too many items on my "list" to even dream about getting done.  But day after day I check off an item feeling a sense of accomplishment with each little check mark.  But really is it an "accomplishment"?  Or is it just another motion of the day?

I was having a rare 10 minutes of silence in a cab when I was at a conference, I decided NOT to check my email (gasp) and actually look out the window and think... even if it was a short amount of time.  And typically I do think in this situation.  But it is more like - I think of how much traffic there is or how clearly the cab driver can not drive as well or as fast as I can, the list goes on and on.  However, this time I didn't think of those things.  Rather I looked out the window and noticed a beautiful Boston building and just stared at it and the people going in and out of the building.

After a minute or so I did wonder back into work mode - but in a GOOD way.  I admired the architecture of the buildings and thought of their prescence on the street, how visually appealing they were and what kind of experience the people going into those buildings were having.  In thinking of these things it made me think of the structure of my own company, what our prescence is, how we look to others, and most importantly what kind of experience do we give our clients and potential clients.  This may seem like a no brainer - and things that business owners "should" think of all the time - but let's face it, we get busy!  Busy wilth check lists and meetings.  That becomes our daily routine, and it quite frankly it has to, because if it weren't I'm not sure anyone would make any money.

My point is this, you should stop and think every now and then, get a new perspective just to "see" things and you will be surprised what you may uncover.  This is not new advice - it is just advice that I think you need to hear every now and then to truly understand how important it is.  I know the next office meeting I will unload waaaaay more than project updates to my company.  Things like extended vacation, a new "dress code", things that I don't think they will be unhappy to hear about.  But without staring up at a building in a cab am not sure they would exsist. So go ahead and take a minute to stop and think.
