Design Trends
Thankfully the reflection look is on its way out. For those of you that still like the glossy, reflection look you are in luck - it is not completely eliminated. But I personally am very ready for the new trend in design.
Colors: I found that the "in" colors along with the typical earth tones seem to ones that are bolder. One color in particular has not exactly been in the spotlight in the last couple of years but seems to be taking the lead on more edgy things, is the color orange. And I don't mean just the bright orange like on a construction site, but variations of the color, especially toward the more muted version that borders on a brown like color. I for one am excited for this new challenge as orange is one of the more difficult colors to work with.
Fonts: In the web world we don't get all that excited for fonts considering we try to stay within a little bubble of acceptable fonts. A few years ago Verdana was all the rage, now we are seeing that the serif fonts have finally taken the reigns as the standard font for 2009. You’ll see a lot of
On the other hand, for print work, the font style that has really taken the lead for 2009 is a font style that looks like it was hand written. You can find examples of this emerging all over the web, but it is most noticeable in print advertising. Ones that can be the good old stand by (and a bit boring...) are fonts like Bradley Hand, and Pristina. But if you really want to talk about a cool way to make your font stand out you can check out fonts like: DuGauguin & Exp, swing, and ITC Santageli.
Style: A great compliment to the hand written font is the current style trend. It is all about textures. Paper textures in particular, think cardboard, crinkled notebook paper, as well as the antiqued paper look. But these textures are not limited to paper. Other cool textures are metal, velvet wallpaper, and leather. Not to be left behind is the continuation of the Victorian type style with funky ornaments and scrolls, and rich wall paper looking backgrounds. These two styles come together beautifully and a result is a truly creative piece that is a lot more fun than working with gradients and blurs!
This year it is all about hand crafted, texture rich design with a pop of bold color like orange. I am excited to see what comes out of this new trend in both print and web design!
